I've been troubled with back pain since March, making it difficult for me to sleep properly, so I'm thrilled to bits that yesterday's adventure does not seem to have made matters worse.

The nearest village to us has a church right on top of the hill. My parents were married there in 1951. Mum discovered that the bell tower would be open yesterday so off we went for an explore.

Christ Church, Aughton.

The thicker of the four turrets contains the spiral staircase to the top. Awkward to climb as it goes up widdershins instead of sunwise like castle spirals.

There are certain lanes around the church, where it appears slowly from top down as you walk along, reminiscent of seeing a fairytale castle.

Mum having fun. She never thought she'd get to try this in the church where she was married :)

Remarkably my back held up. I've always wanted to try this but I had to stand on a box to reach the bellpull and even then I couldn't stretch up very high. Something I should have tried in my youth. Maybe in the next life if I get longer legs, haha.

The mountains of Wales in the background. The large tower on the horizon is the Anglican cathedral in Liverpool and the next shorter one to its left is the Roman Catholic cathedral. Beautiful day with fabulous views all round.

Such a good day out :D
