Same here. My grandfather was in his 30s when the war started. He was a wireless telegrapher for the GPO so was late being called up. The younger sailors used to call him 'Dad'. When he arrived home in '46, his son, born in '41, did not know him. They never really had a good relationship. The knock on effects of absent fathers can be lifelong. Such a shame. My mum remembered him from before so was able to pick up on their previous good relationship. I remember him fondly. He had such good stories to tell from his time in Mozambique and the Eastern African countries.
