Still raining.

There are infrequent gloomy gaps but for most of the time the skies are emptying their load. Where' s it comimg from? Rather the question should be "Where's it all going?"

Luckily, my town lies on the second escarpment from the sea ie the sea is about six miles due West of here, there is a wide strip of low-lying land called Downholland (holland meaning low flat land liable to sea flooding) then there is the first rise that leads onto the next flat level then the next rise up where we live. Then there's another flat strip then the third rise to Upholland--logical. Our town is fairly level atop of the second rise and so has no river, just a network of streams draining the surrounding farmland. In other words, despite the continuous rainfall for about two weeks, we are safe from flooding. So far the drains have handled the rain very well but the gardens are absolutely waterlogged.

Yesterday was school Sports Day but we held it indoors with skills-based activities because we couldn't hold races outside. Standing there, counting how many balls were being fetched back by spoon and dropped into a hoop, I thought back to last year's Sports Day. The weather had been dry for weeks--blue skies and scorching temperatures. I had felt smugly lucky that my event was being held in the shade of a row of tall poplars that run along one edge of the field. The children had been smeared with sunscreen and some were wearing caps with tails to protect their necks. Is the difference between this year and last within normal limits or something else? I don't know but quite possibly this type of awfully wet summer is not unknown. Still, I'd rather this than the temperatures of 40+C in Greece. Earlier this week it reached 46C!!

April was glorious. Was that our summer?
