On a more personal note...
Mar. 14th, 2009 08:58 amI'm very aware that all I've been posting for a long time are surveys and things pinched off other folk. Blame it on the a) lack of spare time and b) stress at work leading to a)
BUT
I'm not wasting these few free moments to go on about that.
Today is my father's 80th birthday! He is 80 years young! If he had an lj I'd post him a sparkly image of gorillas if I could find one.
Tonight, the whole family, from near and far, will be together for his party. It's been many a moon since we've all been together. We're reasonably close-knit in that we care enough about each other to keep in touch but live far enough apart not to drive each other mad.
This will mean nearly 30 of us, from birthday-boy age down to his latest great-grandchild of 9 months, all vying for the chance to talk to him and wish him the best for the next 20 years. I am sure he has the vim and vigour to make the century. Mum, as usual, will be the matriarch (in the nicest way) of the whole brood and keep an eye on what he's eating. He retired 10 years ago and she has kept a strict eye on what he eats since being solely in charge of his intake. It's somewhat of a family joke that left to himself he'd eat far too much red meat. I'm sure that it's because of her that he's remained in such good health for so long as most of the men in his family didn't make it past 65.
He must have some 'youth' gene from somewhere as, despite going bald at a young age on the top of his head, the side hair and beard (bone of contention for the past 40 years!) are still more brown than grey.
No-one knows what to buy him so we've all left it to the last moment--typical family trait--but the party has been arranged and organised for months. I'm shooting off into town shortly to purchase a digital photo frame. He has kept pace with modern life, possessing a pc and digital camera so I think he'll make use of the photo frame. I've organised a photographer to be there as the last thing I want is to try and grab a passing waitress, saying, "Please take a picture of all of us together." I know my family would spend a lot of time with cameras and mobile phones attempting to draw folk into one spot and then of course produce plenty of photos where the taker is always missing. The benefit of a hired photographer at least means there will be a couple of pictures with every one of us together. I hope.
I'll probably bore you with them when I get them. The photographer will put them onto a CD for us to peruse and choose from.
Anyway, I suppose I'd better make a move. It's a bright sunny day but soooo windy. I'm not usually a hair-proud woman but Jenn's gone to a lot of trouble to make it look good so I'd better wrap a scarf round it! I'll look like the Queen--the only woman I know that still wears scarves.
