Tomorrow

Some schools, in the town where I teach, are open tomorrow but ours is still closed. The slope downhill is accessible by 4x4, with a lot of slipping and sliding, but almost impossible to drive up. Even if staff could get into school, there is the danger of children/adults slipping on site. Litigation, newspaper headlines etc. We can't take the chance.

Doesn't the Dept Public Works put down salt or salt and sand on the roads? I may bitch, but at least our city plows and does that.

The town where I teach was built in the 60s to be pedestrian friendly. All schools are at the centre of housing estates so allowing parents and children to access them on pathways, without using roads. All roads are minor ones linking areas of the estates to the main roads built around the estate perimeters. The main roads have been gritted but there is a shortage of saltgrit so minor ones have not been treated. Add to that the fact that the school and estate were built on the side of a steep hill and we have the situation we find ourselves in. The County Works Dept. is aware of the problem.

Elementary and high schools have been closed here for days as well. All of last week, practically, and probably tomorrow too. Everything is just refusing to melt.
