This is an art installation at Crosby Beach near Liverpool. Antony Gormley made 100 steel figures looking out to see at various distances from the sea wall. It's called 'Another Place' because they are staring out towards somewhere they might like to be. It's evocative of all the people who have left home willingly or unwillingly. Went to see it today for the first time and was impressed by the way they were slowly revealed as the high tide turned. Fascinating. Lovely summery day!
What a great statement--the figure is very realistic: I thought for a moment it was a man covered in mud! I like the jellyfish pics, too---we see the same one on the east coast where I used to live.
The dumpy one in blue, showing how to keep a man in his place? Yes, indeed it is :D
It's become somewhat of a tradition to dress the figures, much in the way you would dress a snowman. This explains why one of the figures is wearing swimming trunks, though I don't know how they were put on him!
Antony Gormley's work is usually based on his own body shape. He is totally cocooned in cling-film then plaster is daubed all over and he has to remain still until it dries. The plaster mould is then used as a template for the metal. Google him to see his other work.
Love the icon, just never got round to saying so :) 'I'll put you in your coffin, Father!' just wouldn't be so immediate if Claudia has used a fork! Crazy image of L being poked into submission :)
