Winter Solstice
Dec. 21st, 2007 10:05 amSo I got up early today, despite being on holiday from school, just to see the sunrise. I've been doing this for a few years now and used to walk into the countrside with Jenn when she was living at home. We've had some of our best mother-daughter talks at this special time waiting for the sunrise.
Anyway, I ventured outside and discovered that the sky was totally overcast so there was zero chance of seeing that marvellous sight of the pale winter sun peeping over the horizon. What a disappointment. I'll try again tomorrow and as Jenn is coming home today, I may well have a companion.
So, I came back inside and watched the sunrise at Newgrange in Ireland via this webcast:

It was fantastic! Highly recommended viewing. In case you've never heard of it, the Neolithic tomb has its entrance and passageway lined up to the sunrise on the shortest day of the year. The light penetrates the tomb through a specially constructed opening above the doorway and illuminates the deeper chamber and its inscribed art only on the days around 21st December. Every other day of the year, the tomb is in total darkness.
This morning's weather conditions were absolutely perfect. The whole experience was magical even via webcam and the recording is being broadcast regularly on the site. If you can access this site at 8:30am GMT tomorrow morning, there will be another live viewing of the dawn but the weather is not expected to be as good.
